China Telecom, China Unicom Separately Announce 3G Rollout Schedule

Following China Mobile's announcement that the company would launch the Pan-China TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) services by 2011, on January 14 China Telecom and China Unicom have separately announced the specific rollout schedule for their respective 3G services, Sohu News reported.

China Telecom plans to offer CDMA 2000 (Code Division Multiple Access 2000) services in 100 major cities in China by late March 2009, kicking off the pan-China rollout in July 2009, according to the same source quoting the executive vice president of China Telecom, Zhang Jiping.

Meanwhile, China Unicom also announced that the company will roll out WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) services in China's 55 cities in the first half of 2009, according again to Sohu News quoting the CEO (Chief Executive Office) of China Unicom, Chang Xiaobing. Chang said that China Unicom plans to invest over 60 billion RMB (US$; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) in 2009 into the 3G network construction, with its network coverage expected to cover to 280 cities by year-end 2009.
